Warm Apple Crumble or Apple Crisp

I love desserts, maybe more than the entrees. After coming to US, two desserts turned to be our new favorites - Warm Apple Crumble and Cheesecake. Apple Crumble seemed something I could try in my kitchen and take my word, it is absolutely scrumptious too. A baked dessert made of soft caramelized apples topped with a crisp crust, also known as Apple Crisp or Apple Crostata.
I make this more often now, whenever I want to finish off the apples. Also, an effortless dessert perfect for entertaining guests.

Ingredients:
Apples - 2
Lemon Juice - about 1 tbsp
All Purpose Flour - 1/4 cup
Whole Wheat Flour - 1/4 cup
Almonds or Walnuts or Pecans - 1/4 cup
Light Brown Sugar - 1/2 cup
Ground Cinnamon/Dalchini Powder - 1/2 tsp
Ground Nutmeg/Jaiphal Powder - 1/8 tsp
Butter - 1/4 cup/4 tbsp
Vanilla or Dulce de Leche Ice cream

How to prepare Crispy Apple Crumble:
  • In a big bowl of water, add lemon juice and mix. Peel the apple skin. Add thin sliced apples to the water to avoid darkening of apples. I used Honey Crisp Apples. For a little tartness, you can use Granny Smith Apples as well.
  • Preheat the oven at 375 degrees F.
  • Microwave butter for 20 seconds, just enough to soften it. In a mixing bowl, add softened butter, all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, chopped almonds, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix all the ingredients well to form a crumbly dough.
  • Graham crackers (powdered) or Oats can also be added to this crust.
  • Grease an oven safe dish with butter. Drain the water of the apples completely. Spread the apples on the greased dish evenly. Top the apples with the crumbly dough evenly. Bake for 15 - 20 minutes or till apples soften.

Serve warm Apple Crumble with scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzle it with caramel. My favorites are Dulce de Leche Ice cream and Butter Pecan.

  1. I love apple crumble, when I first moved to the UK I used to make this so much, that husband stopped eating it. I used to finish all of it. Finally stopped making it and then kind of forgot about it. Your post reminded me of apple crumbles. Thanks for sharing this Uma :-)

    1. Hey Suchi, reading your comment made me smile. Such instances have happened with me too. I made a particular recipe so many times that it no longer remained favorite.
